What is the apex in a builder gel manicure?Updated 8 days ago

Builder Gel can be used to build an apex on your nail to help reinforce your nails and create a smooth, rounded look. The apex, the highest point on the nail structure, is placed at the stress area of the nail (usually the upper third of the nail plate) - the area most prone to pressure and bending from everyday activities.

Structural benefits of building an apex:

- Protects against breakage by helping nails withstand impact and reducing cracks, breaks, and lifting

- Enhances durability, providing strength and flexibility as the nail grows

- Reinforces nails for enhancements, since longer length means increased strain on the nail

- Protects the natural nail against thinning, peeling, and discomfort

Aesthetic benefits: an apex creates a natural, balanced look with a plump appearance that complements your natural nail beds.

Take a look at your nail from a side view to determine where you might need to fill in divots or bumps with builder gel. The goal is a smooth, rounded surface from the side view. If your nails are flatter, an apex can support your nail at your stress point. If your nails have dramatic ridges or divots, builder gel can help smooth their appearance. If your nails slope upward, you can build an apex to create a more rounded look.

Do I need to build an apex? Not necessarily. If your natural nails are shorter, you probably don't need one - the strength of builder gel alone can offer structural support. Very short nails may have an unnaturally plump look with an apex and don't need one for their length.
