How do I prep for Dip?
Watch the Olive University tutorial: Perfect Prep for a Dip Mani.
- Read all instructions before beginning and lay out your tools on a clean, flat surface. During the Dip steps, apply Base Coat and dip one nail at a time — the adhesive dries quickly, so dip immediately after applying Base Coat.
- Shape: Clip about 90% of the way to your preferred shape, then file the final 10%.
- Cuticles: Apply Cuticle Remover, massage gently, let sit for 5 minutes, gently push back cuticles with the Mani Pusher, then wipe away residue.
- Buff: Lightly buff the nail surface and dry cuticle area in gentle circular motions.
- Clean: Dip each nail into the Acetone Remover Pot to remove dust and lingering oil. The nail plate should be completely dry and dehydrated before application.

Step 1: Base Powder
- Swirl/fluff the Base Powder before you begin.
- Work one nail at a time.
- Apply a thin coat of Dip Powder Base Coat to the upper 3/4 of the nail through the tip.
- Leave a small gap at the sides of the nail and avoid getting Base Coat on skin.
- Dip immediately into Dip Base Powder and tap off excess.
- If you see shiny or bare spots, re-dip immediately.
- Clean around the cuticle with the Dip Clean-up Tool and brush away excess with the Dust Brush.
- Repeat with the remaining nails, one at a time.
- Keep the powder fluffy throughout application — swirl/fluff approximately every 1–2 nails.
Step 2: Color
- Swirl/fluff the Color Powder before applying Base Coat.
- Apply Dip Powder Base Coat over the entire nail, avoiding the skin and cuticle and leaving a thin border around the sides.
- Dip immediately into Dip Color Powder and tap off excess.
- Clean around the cuticle and sidewalls right away.
- Repeat with the remaining nails, continuing to swirl/fluff the Color Powder every 1–2 nails.
- Brush away excess powder, then repeat with Base Coat plus a second coat of Dip Color Powder.
Step 3: Set + Shape
- Apply Dip Powder Activator using no more than 1–2 strokes.
- Let dry for 2 minutes.
- Apply an even layer of Dip Powder Base Coat over the entire nail and let dry for 2 minutes.
- Buff in gentle circular motions until the surface is matte, smooth, and even, including the cuticle line and sidewalls.
- Start with the Shape/coarser side of the buffer and finish with the Smooth side.
- Spend at least 30 seconds with each side of the buffer.
- If the sidewalls need refinement, file gently in one direction rather than sawing back and forth.
Step 4: Seal
- Brush away buffing dust with the Dust Brush.
- Apply another even coat of Dip Powder Activator using no more than 1–2 strokes.
- Avoid repeatedly brushing over the same area.
- Let dry for 2 minutes.
Step 5: Shine
- Apply an even coat of Dip Powder Top Coat over the entire nail.
- Let dry for 5 minutes.
- The Top Coat should feel hard and dry, not tacky.
- Do not wash your hands for at least 10 minutes after finishing.
- Wait 1 hour before applying hydration products.
How many layers of Dip Color Powder should I use?
We recommend two color layers. A third layer can be added, but it will add substantial volume to the nail.
What are the most important application tips?
- Prep is everything: push back cuticles, lightly buff the nail plate, and use acetone so the nail is clean, dry, and dehydrated.
- Swirl to fluff: keep both Base and Color Powders fluffy throughout application.
- Work quickly: Base Coat begins drying immediately, so apply to one finger at a time and dip right away.
- Clean as you go: remove stray Base Coat or powder from skin and sidewalls before it dries.
- Do not rush Activator: allow the full 2 minutes after application.
- Do not over-buff: buff only until the nail is matte and smooth. A lot of color transferring to the buffer can be a sign of over-buffing.
- Brush Activator on lightly so you do not disturb the powder surface by pressing too hard.
Why did my Base Coat brush get difficult to use?
If product or powder buildup is making the Base Coat brush difficult to use, swap in the extra Dip Powder Base Coat brush included with the system.
Why is my Dip lifting at the cuticle or sidewalls?
Common causes include Base Coat touching the skin or sidewalls, too much product pooling near the cuticle, or incomplete prep.
- Start with a fully dry, dehydrated nail plate.
- Leave a small gap between Base Coat and skin.
- Clean any Base Coat from skin and sidewalls immediately.
- Start brush application near the center of the nail and guide product toward the base without flooding the cuticle.
- Carefully file off lifted areas as they occur rather than peeling them.
Why is my Dip lifting at the free edge?
Over-filing the free edge or building too much product at the tip can contribute to lifting. Focus filing on the surface rather than aggressively filing the free edge and keep application even.
Why is my Dip cracking, lifting, or chipping?
Watch the Olive University tutorial: Dip Problem Solving.
Lifting is commonly tied to prep, Base Coat touching the skin or sidewalls, product pooling near the cuticle, over-filing the free edge, or excess product at the tip. If you are seeing cracking or chipping even after following the application steps, reach out to us so we can help troubleshoot.
Why does my Dip look uneven, patchy, grainy, lumpy, or wavy?
Watch the Olive University tutorial: How to Get a Smooth and Neat Dip Mani.
Dip powder finishes vary by formula. Traditional dip powders typically use acrylic-based ingredients to create their signature finish, while Olive & June’s non-acrylic, plant-based Dip Powder takes a different approach. For the best results, buff your manicure until the surface is completely matte, smooth, and even before the final Dip Activator application and Top Coat. This helps create a beautifully natural-looking, smooth finish.
- Use thin, even layers of Base Coat.
- Avoid double-dipping.
- Fluff/swirl the powder before and throughout application.
- Dip immediately after applying Base Coat.
- After Activator has fully dried, buff with the coarser side followed by the smoother side until the surface is matte and smooth.
Why do I see shiny spots after dipping?
Shiny spots can mean the Base Coat did not fully contact the powder. Dip immediately after applying Base Coat so the powder can adhere evenly.
Why does my Dip have pits or an “orange peel” texture?
This can happen if there is not enough Activator or the nail needs more buffing. Apply a medium-thick, even layer of Activator without flooding the nail, allow it to dry fully, then buff first with the coarser side and then with the smoother side.
Why isn’t my Dip shiny?
Make sure the nail is fully buffed smooth before Top Coat and that you are using enough Top Coat. Aim for a medium-thick Top Coat layer without flooding the nail.
Why is my Dip crumbling while I buff?
The Activator may not have had enough time to work. Allow at least 2 full minutes after applying Activator before continuing.
Can I use Dip for a pedicure?
Yes. The custom shaker top is designed to make DIY Dip pedicures easier.
- Prep toes as you would for a regular pedicure: smooth heels, shape nails, push back cuticles, and cleanse nails with acetone.
- Apply Dip Powder Base Coat one toe at a time.
- Follow the standard Dip steps, but instead of dipping your toe into the powder, use the shaker top to shake Dip Color Powder onto one toe at a time.
How do I remove Dip?
Watch the Olive University tutorial: Dip Removal.
- Gently file the Top Coat/surface until the manicure is matte. Never file through to the natural nail.
- Soak in acetone for about 15–20 minutes, or until the Dip is soft and removes easily.
- Acetone-free polish remover will not remove Dip.
- For the fastest results, use the Salon Speed Soak Off System.
- No nail drill or e-file is required.
- After soaking, gently swipe softened product away and lightly buff any remaining product.
- If the Dip is still hard, re-file the surface and re-soak. Never force or peel Dip off.
- Rehydrate nails and cuticles with Cuticle Serum and, if available, Hand Serum.
Can I fill Dip instead of fully removing it?
We recommend a full removal each time rather than filling the existing manicure.

Can I use regular polish or gel polish over Dip?
